Introduction
6005 aluminum plate is a forged aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy from the 6000 (6xxx) series and is one of the most widely used rust-resistant aluminum types. It is closely related to 6005A but not identical. The main difference is that 6005 has a higher minimum composition percentage than 6005A (while their maximum values are basically the same). The most common forming method is extrusion.
6005 alloy has performance similar to 6106 and 6082 alloys and can sometimes be interchanged, but 6005/6005A have better extrusion characteristics. However, the chemical compositions of 6005 and 6005A are different, so they should not be confused. 6005 contains significantly higher silicon, which lowers the melting temperature and improves extrudability. 6005 is similar to 6061 alloy. When produced in -T5 temper, its minimum tensile strength and yield strength are the same as 6061-T6, and its machinability and strength performance are better than 6063-T6. 6005A may also replace 6061 because it offers better extrudability and surface appearance.
Key Features
- High strength, especially high fatigue strength. High plasticity and good corrosion resistance; cannot be heat-treatment strengthened.
- Good plasticity in semi-cold work hardening; lower plasticity in cold work hardening; poorer machinability; can be polished.
- Good cold workability. Similar performance to 6106 and 6082 alloys and sometimes interchangeable, but 6005/6005A have better extrusion performance.
- In T5 temper, its minimum tensile and yield strengths match 6061-T6; machinability and strength are better than 6063-T6.
- Welding performance is similar to 5182 aluminum plate; good oxy-fuel, TIG, spot welding and roll welding results.
Applications
6005 aluminum plate can also be used for handrail tubes, trucks, trailers, automobile/bus/railway components, platforms, ladders, structural and construction applications, and marine uses.
