Introduction
5A05 aluminum plate is an Al–Mg rust-resistant aluminum alloy (5B05 has slightly higher Mg content than 5A05). This alloy has relatively high Mg content and lower strength, close to that of 5A03. In the annealed condition it offers relatively high plasticity; in the semi-cold work hardening condition it has medium plasticity.
5A05 aluminum plate has good welding performance using hydrogen-atom welding, spot welding, gas welding, and argon arc welding, and it has high corrosion resistance. Cutting machinability is lower in the annealed state but better in the semi-hardened condition. For making rivets, it can undergo anodizing treatment.
Key Features
- Because 5A05 is also a 5xxx-series alloy, its main features are low density, high tensile strength, and high elongation.
- For the same area, Al–Mg alloys are lighter than many other series. It has high strength, especially good fatigue strength.
- Corrosion resistance is high and it cannot be heat-treatment strengthened.
- Plasticity is good under semi-cold work hardening, but lower under cold work hardening; weldability is good and it can be polished.
- As part of the hot-rolled aluminum sheet family, it can be used for deep oxidation treatment.
Applications
- Primarily used for low-load components that require high plasticity and good weldability, such as oil tanks (also suitable for aircraft fuel tanks due to lower weight vs other series of equal area alloys), gasoline or lubricant pipelines, and other liquid containers and deep-drawn small-load parts. Welding wire is used for welding electrodes and rivets (requiring anodizing).
- In other countries, similar alloys such as 5456 are used to manufacture armor plates and high-strength structural parts, storage tanks, pressure vessels and ship components.
